Note this before you resume the term.
Whatever learning challenge a child in your class has, try getting the root cause rather than labeling the child.
READ ON…
I have this child in class. Girl is excellent at reading and spelling, one of the best in class. But here’s the issue…
COMPREHENSION, LEARNING RETENTION, RECALLING
She finds it difficult to understand comprehension passages and thus can’t answer the questions.
You teach a topic in class and ask questions and she’s struggling to understand the question.
A concept you believe she understands, it gets to assessment week and she’s giving answers that don’t relate.
This extends to all subjects.
When you have children like this, desist from labeling them or concluding that they’re not brilliant.
FIND A SOLUTION
Study time: Don’t leave them to study alone. Create time to study with them.
Don’t go about it the normal way, try to be dramatic about it (I like the word dramatic, it describes my teaching methods 😁).
Link the topic to something they already know, and create visuals both realistic and fictional.
Teaching: When teaching them, use hands-on-activities. Children this way tend to recall when they were fully involved in the learning.
Ask them for suggestions, get them involved in presentations, group projects, and use visual aids.
For children in this phase, you should work towards creating a photographic memory for every topic learned in class.
Don’t be tired of explaining to them. Be reminded that they take longer to learn a concept so be there for them all the way.
Break complex steps into simpler bits and give them the chance to learn at their own pace.
Don’t use vague terms/words when explaining, use familiar words. It’s easy to recall.
During our end-of-term examination, one of the mathematics questions this child found very easy to answer was the one on pizza.
Remember the fraction class where pizza was used as a learning aid? She answered the questions in a jiffy.
As you resume the term, please try to understand your learners better. Don’t generalize or compare their academic performance.
Ask questions when in doubt. Read and make research.
I’m still in the business of reviewing your scheme and ensuring every child understands what you teach. Click the link below.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, FRIENDS 🥰
