It was a new section and I was the new class teacher for primary three. I love meeting children so I just couldn’t shake off the excitement, it was so visible.
I started the class with my usual bubbling nature. We had the introduction round, discussed about last term and what we expect from the new section. They were all happy and smiling except this child who I noticed has been frowning all along.
My boy continued that way for days and it had me worrying and thinking of ways I could connect with him. I love asking my students if we’re friends and days after I became their new class teacher they all extended their hands of friendship to me except this child. This boy bluntly told me I was not his friend.
We continued this way for some weeks and daily I just kept devising strategies to connect with this child because it was beginning to look like a challenge (smiles).
Days later I started noticing some changes in him. I was giving high fives to my students and my boy brought out his hands too. I said something funny and he smiled even though he tried to hide his face ( I still noticed it). He even started telling me stories of his favourite dog. I was surprised but I kept my cool and enjoyed the moment.
Then the best happened Drum rolls thunder strikes rainbow shines (inserts other dramatic elements)
The school has closed for the day and I was alone in the classroom putting things in order when a child ran into the classroom. My boy ran into the class, gave me a hug and said ” Miss Dairo thank you for today”. I didn’t see that coming. I asked him “are we friends now?” “Yes you’re my friend now” he stretched his hand, gave me a candy and ran away.
I cried. I just couldn’t believe that happened. I also enjoyed my candy with gladness. Guess who was always saying “you’re not my friend again” anytime I scold him. You guessed right. We remained friends still and lived happily ever after.
