NATURE LEARNING

On Tuesday 9th of March, 2021, I was sitting pretty on my chair (Miss Dairo is a pretty teacher) after having to attend to a long list of cases brought to my table. I remembered I once complained about my students finding it difficult to make simple sentences and immediately an idea popped in. I asked them to get their writing materials and stand according to their accountability partner group, we marched out or rather still we giggled out (you need to see my student’s reaction whenever we’re to have an outdoor learning).

One strategy I’ve been constantly applying in my classroom is the play infused learning. I’m a class teacher to a class of playful and hyper active children so infusing play into the day’s lesson has proved productive.

Pardon me deviating. Now this was the task;

As a group, they were to look around them and write out the spellings of 20 different things they can see. This was a test of observation and critical thinking. They set out as groups and after about 25 minutes they completed the first task. I then explained the second and most important task to them.

The second task requires them to make sentences based on what nature has provided. I told them there are many sentences around them provided by nature’s kindness, just look around and note down the sentences. For example, if I look round and notice a dirty bottle on the floor then my sentence will be There is a dirty bottle on the floor.

They were quite excited. They started exploring the school compound in search of sentences nature has provided and within a short period some groups completed the second task. I went through the sentences and I couldn’t be more proud and grateful to God for letting me in on this strategy. Let me take you through some of the amazing sentences;

The block is beside the tree

Iyanu was running and laughing

The plantain tree has fallen

I was so shocked at how beautifully crafted the sentences are. Imagine if this becomes a daily routine. I’m definitely making this a weekly routine. I can’t wait for nature to unleash my babies full potential. I also forgot to mention we had our lunch outside after the first task (table manners was totally absent though).
