READING STRATEGY (PART 5) COMPREHENSION CLASS ROUTINE

I had to make a video so you would understand perfectly how I run my comprehension/reading classes.

Our comprehension classes span through a minimum of two days.

Based on the reading abilities of your learners, you might want to extend or reduce the days.

FIRST DAY

We kickstart our reading by picking and learning our new/difficult words. Doing that reduces the number of “I can’t pronounce this” you would get when they read.

After learning the new words, we move on to reading the passage.

If it’s a long passage, we only read half of it.
Remember these children are still beginner readers so you don’t have to work them up with long passages. Some might get bored along the way.

We start with our group reading. I read along with them about twice. This helps them get familiar with some words.

After that, they move to read as a group. You have to be strategic in grouping them so some children don’t get left behind.

The next step is individual reading. Now you want to know the words each child has learned or the ones they still find difficult.

After the group reading, they take the passage home as a reading assignment.

SECOND DAY

Now they are more familiar with the words in the passage. We now move t reading the whole passage and focus more on certain students who might need help with their reading.

Now we move to answer the questions for the passage.

For starters, I would advise you to start with a group class-work.

  • Step 1: Assign question numbers to students.
  • Step 2: When they read, ask them to tell the class their answer.
  • Step 3: You can guide them on ways to get the answers to questions asked.
  • Step 4: When a child gets the answer, it is repeated and everyone writes it down.

This process might look long and stressful to you but trust me, as the week goes by, the duration spent reduces.

It helps them get better at reading and also develops their comprehension skills.

Not just are they reading, but they are also getting familiar with more words

It would get to a time, you wouldn’t need this whole process for some children as they would be able to work independently.

Would you try out this strategy?
